A Nursery That You and Baby Will Love

The nursery is your baby's world, his new nest. Within its confines, infants are nurtured, mothers rest in plush overstuffed chairs, and families gather to enjoy their little ones. Multifunctional rooms require planning, but one that provides comfort to the youngest family member calls for extra care and consideration. As they tend to be smaller rooms, take care not to overdo your baby's surroundings. Begin by determining which pieces of furniture are necessary for you and your baby. Mapping out the nursery is an opportunity to evaluate space before purchasing furniture and opens discussion about the rooms' function. Babies grow and the nursery will soon play another role in the home.

A crib, changing table, and armoire are nursery staples, but parents find that other pieces add comfort and convenience, ie., a nursing chair. While most parents design a nursery based on the sex of their expected child, some wait for the ultimate surprise. Once the furniture needs have been determined, focus on the intriguing decor.

Contemporary
Contemporary nurseries are all the new rage. Bratt Decor's Blu collection and classic Dick collection are the epitome of contemporary and perfect for the modern mommy-to-be. Combine colors and textures, and items that may not seem like traditional baby pieces. For depth, pair prints and patterns with solid walls and plush solid fabrics. Rich stained woods such as Bratt Decor's complement colorful schemes and contrast perfectly with a modernist design.

Traditional
Introduce your child to traditional decor with ornate woods and iron crib that offer an heirloom feel, like Bratt Decor's Chelsea, Venetian, and/or Premiere cribs. Heirloom pieces add a touch of sophistication. Intricatley carved woods add depth and coordinate a variety of classic prints and textures. Consider how the nursery and its belongings will function when the baby begins to grow. Will the nursery be converted to an office or playroom later? A crib that converts to a bed or settee or a changing tables that transitions to a dresser can be tempting. An armoire or wardrobe functions well for organizing the nursery, transitioning later to a toddler's room or to serve another purpose in the home.

Italian Influence
Grand decor characterizes this look. Italian inspired nurseries are brought to life with an iron crib, unique furnishings and gold and bronze accents. The wall colors can be pulled from the furnishings. Textured walls are increasingly popular and well suited in Italian-themed nurseries. Antique chairs and rugs bring an array of prints while opening up color options for walls and crib linens. The palette makes Italian inspired nurseries wonderful unisex options.

Victorian
A Victorian nursery complements heirloom furnishings and colorful prints while providing an ideal backdrop for lavish accessories. Lace fabrics, toile upholsteries, cradles with intricate details and vibrant hues are part of a Victorian mix. Babies respond to the variety and parents can incorporate individual style with heirloom pieces. Parents fond of seeking out antiques will relish the diversity and charm as hand-painted furnishings amidst a variety of upholsteries tells a family story.

Shabby Chic
Shabby Chic is an opportunity to combine styles and fabrics, creating a fun room for young children as well as baby. White cribs covered in cotton chenille, cozy nursery gliders and vintage finds complete the look. Shabby Chic is casual and elegant with a fresh feel and abundance of natural light - great for receiving visitors and keeping baby's room bright. Frivolous furnishings are kept to a minimum, as simple style, color and accessories are the essence of Shabby Chic. Washed cottons and hand-painted furniture works well. We suggest the Premiere or Venetian cribs to complete this look.
