A man's home might be his castle, but his children's rooms are their kingdoms, lavished nowadays with kiddie-customized accouterments from crib to computer station.

If a boy wants to sleep in a custom-built space ship, with fiber optic lighting and engine roar sound effects, he can. If a girl wants her bed in a super-sized doll house, she can have it, according to Diane DeWald, owner of Mega Kids Inc. in Park Shore Plaza. De Wald has been concocting the fantasy beds her clients request for the past 12 years, as well as providing more typical juvenile furniture in her 12,000 square-foot showroom.
It depends upon the age, she explained. Infants don't say much about their room design, she quipped, so the mothers make the nursery decisions. Right now, many are influenced by celebrity moms. They see what the stars have for their babies and they want the same for their own.

New parents spend between $5,000 and $15,000 to decorate Baby's nursery, according to the Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association, driving a $7.3 billion industry. That's a lot of money to spend on a room Junior can't enjoy until he's crawling.

Parents spend a lot of time in their new baby's room, which is why some parents consider their own decorating likes and dislikes when creating a nursery.

Sarah Horn, owner of SHA, said parents are looking for custom pieces to put in nurseries. "People are liking to create their own now, versus buying something off the shelf," she said. "Once somebody realizes they can really put their personal touch on it, they tend to like it."

Including Mom and Dad's personality in nursery decor gives the room a comfortable and personal feel. It also creates a space they enjoy spending time in-and they will be spending a lot of time in it.

With her due date quickly approaching, and the probability of an early delivery looming, Hot Moms Club introduced Brooke Sheen to Amanda Moore and her interior design firm re:place to create a dream nursery for the beautiful twin boys that she and Charlie Sheen welcomed into the world this Spring.
The Sheen's stressed the priority of comfort to their design team at re:place, which started with the plush 100% natural wool wall-to-wall carpet that covers the entire nursery. Little crawling knees will be very grateful! Brooke and Charlie wanted the perfect pair of comfortable gliders, for bonding, feeding, and of course for watching ESPN highlights. They chose Serena & Lilys ultra comfortable and stylish Henry Gliders with matching ottomans. What does it take to put together a fantastic nursery? It turns out you don't need a huge budget, interior designer pals or even a perfect space--just a little creativity and sense of what will work for your family. In fact, the whole process was a lot easier than P&N's very pregnant AMY BRAYFIELD expected it to be--which is a good thing, since she waited till pretty much the last possible minute to prep her own nursery.

Things to consider.....

Think furniture

You're going to need a crib and a storage center, but beyond that, think about what you and your baby will really need. Some moms can forego, say, a changing table completely, while other moms swear their changing table was an essential they couldn't live without.

When it comes to furniture, the key is to think about how you'll really use it. If it's important to you to be able to move

Bratt Decor's beautiful chelsea lifetime in iron shines in this fantastic article honoring the richness and luster of metallics. "Whether you prefer the glitz of radiant gold or the history of burnished bronze, metallics give a rich luster to a room that few materials can emulate. What began as an accessory trend, with antique silver frames and gilded mirrors, can now be seen in wall coverings, fabrics and large-scale furniture and in colors that go beyond nature’s creations with luminescent purples, blues and greens."

It's surreal to be getting ready for twins--I can't believe it's actually happening.

Charlie is a baseball fanatic, so we decided to go with a subtle baseball theme for the nursery. We told our designer that we didn't want anything too over the top, and she struck the perfect balance between sporty and sophisticated. Simple touches like the adorable baseball lamps are fun but subtle.

Charlie was very involved in the planning; he cares about all the little details. He wanted to make sure that the carpet was nice and plush! And the twin glider rocking chairs and ottomans will be perfect for baseball watching with the boys!

It's hard to name my favorite part of the nursery, but I love the sleek cribs and changer from Bratt Decor's Blu Collection! They look like they will stand up to the destruction of two boys. And I am also super excited

Go Green In The Nursery

The biggest change I've noticed in the world over the last five years, would be the world wide awakening that has happened as far as our responsibility to this earth, and how we can evoke positive changes. I have to say, that I am thrilled with this new state of being. I am a nature lover, most peaceful in the mountains, and being half Lumbee Indian, I always felt a special connection to the earth, the forest, the rivers, the air . . . So, naturally I've tried to incorporate respect for the earth in all areas of my life, including my business. And, as more and more demand for eco friendly products emerge, so do the resources to create them. That is one of the reasons I love business, it will make available what we demand, and if our consciousness turns toward more responsible behavior,

The customer was clearly in a dilemma when she walked through the shop's door.

What can one possibly purchase as a baby shower gift when the sex of the tiny newcomer is still unknown?

Debbie Melnikoff was quick with her answer.

The owner of Dream Baby Boutique on the Loudoun Street Pedestrian Mall in Winchester propelled her customer toward a wall covered with Loved Baby apparel -- a neutral-colored, mix-and-match clothing line for infants, whether they're made of either snips and snails, or sugar and spice.

Customers "love the 'Loved Baby' butt on the pants," Melnikoff said with a laugh, indicating miniature pairs of rompers with the logos emblazoned on the seats.

Another display features a menagerie of stuffed animals with fuzzy faces and in a variety of species, including ducks, giraffes, bears, frogs and, the most popular item, according to Melnikoff, an impish monkey. They are also available as teethers and are washable,
