New parents spend between $5,000 and $15,000 to decorate Baby's nursery, according to the Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association, driving a $7.3 billion industry. That's a lot of money to spend on a room Junior can't enjoy until he's crawling.

Parents spend a lot of time in their new baby's room, which is why some parents consider their own decorating likes and dislikes when creating a nursery.

Sarah Horn, owner of SHA, said parents are looking for custom pieces to put in nurseries. "People are liking to create their own now, versus buying something off the shelf," she said. "Once somebody realizes they can really put their personal touch on it, they tend to like it."

Including Mom and Dad's personality in nursery decor gives the room a comfortable and personal feel. It also creates a space they enjoy spending time in-and they will be spending a lot of time in it.

When the bed makes the transition You wouldnt be able to tell it was a crib, says Lindsay Clark, e-commerce manager for Bratt Decor in Belvedere Square.

When Tori Spelling began planning her baby boy's nursery, she went straight for the hip online boutique Nursery Couture.
"Because Tori and Dean (McDermott, her husband) are ultra-modern, funky people, they wanted to stick with the same theme for their nursery," Spelling's designer Katy Mimari says.

Photos of little Liam Aaron McDermott's streamlined, modern digs were recently splashed all over In Touch, Us Weekly and Life & Style magazines. You can't open a weekly these days without seeing which celebrity has the hot "new" baby trend.

And one of the biggest trends right now is a parent-friendly, design-conscious nursery, according to Target maternity clothing designer Liz Lange, who recently judged the baby nursery episode of Bravo's "Top Design."

The customer was clearly in a dilemma when she walked through the shop's door.

What can one possibly purchase as a baby shower gift when the sex of the tiny newcomer is still unknown?

Debbie Melnikoff was quick with her answer.

The owner of Dream Baby Boutique on the Loudoun Street Pedestrian Mall in Winchester propelled her customer toward a wall covered with Loved Baby apparel -- a neutral-colored, mix-and-match clothing line for infants, whether they're made of either snips and snails, or sugar and spice.

Customers "love the 'Loved Baby' butt on the pants," Melnikoff said with a laugh, indicating miniature pairs of rompers with the logos emblazoned on the seats.

Another display features a menagerie of stuffed animals with fuzzy faces and in a variety of species, including ducks, giraffes, bears, frogs and, the most popular item, according to Melnikoff, an impish monkey. They are also available as teethers and are washable,

When Mary Bauer was pregnant with her first child in 1995, she did what most new parents do--searched for the right nursery furniture. But for Mary and her husband, Stephen, that search proved futile.

"The face of juvenile furniture was very different," Mary said. "We were trying to find sophisticated, well-designed baby furniture. But it was either very high-end European or Babies "R" Us. There was nothing in between."

After finding nothing that suited their tastes, Stephen, who at the time was working as a commercial illustrator but has a background in furniture making in his native South Africa, designed a crib from scratch--a four-poster iron crib with ostrich feathers. The couple realized there were likely others parents out there that wanted the same level of sophistication and elegance for their nurseries, so the couple formed Bratt Decor. "We incorporated while I was still pregnant," Mary said.

Madonna, Cindy Crawford, and Heather Locklear are just a few of the celebrity moms with kids we love to watch. You can be sure these moms want the finest in room decor for their babies and children. This desire has probably helped fuel a race to bring luxurious kids furniture and accessories to market.

We're not sure how many new parents will actually pop for the $28,000 castle bed featured in the 2000 issue of the Neiman Marcus Catalog.

But they might opt for some of the more affordable, though still plush items for babies and children that are currently available. Just what are the trends in opulence for kids? Currently in fashion is the Italian villa look using warm color-washed walls in golden yellows and furnished with trendy wrought iron furniture (such as the baby changing table from Bratt Decor pictured at right).

The family opened up its home to Life & Style recently to talk about the birth, adjusting to having a new baby in the house -- and the life-changing decision Trista and Ryan made about having more children.

L&S: When Max was born, you had to be put under general anesthesia to have an emergency C-section. How were things different this time around?

Trista: This birth was so much easier. Blakesley was born three weeks early, and I did have another C-section, but I didn't need general anesthesia. I just walked into the hospital and put my gown on, and then my doctor came in and said, "Okay, it's time." I didn't know you could just walk into the delivery room, because the last time, I
