One of the greenest things you can do is buy less stuff. Of course, that's easier said then done when the Incredible Growing Kid gets too big not only for his britches, but also for his bed. So instead of cribs, play tables, and storage that need to be replaced, we're featuring pieces that grow with your child--as well as design tips for repurposing old stuff and tricks for decorating to accommodate evolving interests. Whether you're setting up a nursery or a pretween's room, this approach is easy on the earth--and, in happy coincidence, on your wallet too.

The Mainstays

Bed: This old-fashioned-looking crib keeps up with the times by converting into a daybed (it can also be turned into a canopy crib and four-poster crib). Venetian 3-in-1 crib, $875, Bratt Decor, brattdecor.com.

She's not having twins, but a pregnant Halle Berry is buying in sets of two. The 41-year-old and boyfriend, Gabriel Aubry, have two homes--one in the Hollywood Hills and another in Malibu--so she's decided to design identical nurseries for each residence. "Halle doesn't want her baby confused," an insider says. "She's duplicating everything down to the crib, the linens, and even the stuffed animals." Either Halle doesn't know the sex of her baby--due on Valentine's Day--or she isn't saying, because both nurseries are decorated in lots of yellow and light green without a hint of baby blue or pink.

Halle picked out two Bratt Decor Chelsea Sleigh Cribs in Espresso.

Put any three girls in the same bedroom and you can expect territorial disputes, squabbles over toys, and identity crises. Wage peace with a pretty-in-pastel retreat that clearly gives each girl her domain.

For individuality each of these big, chunky beds is dressed slightly differently in a mix of florals, stripes, and ruffles. The look is unified with identical pink coverlets and floral shams.

Pink and flowers are certainly sweet, but this room is far from saccharine. The biggest jolt of color is the yellow that splashes the upper walls; pink plays only a supporting rolea cheerful solution for girls who are still growing and for busy parents who may lack the time to redo the room when the pink phase passes.
