In 1995, Mary and Stephen Bauer were expecting their first child. Stephen had his own business as a commercial illustrator and was enjoying great success. Mary was a marketing director for a local architectural firm. They both were excited about their new addition. Stephen showed his excitement by designing a gorgeous wrought iron crib for their new baby.

With that crib, Bratt Decor was born. Since then, the Bauer family has grown, as has the business. Bratt Decor designs include baby cribs, dressers, changing tables, childrens furniture and coordinating accessories. Stephen works full-time designing, creating and manufacturing products while Mary manages sales and marketing. Sebastian and Raiff, their sons, do product testing and design input.

M&T Bank won this banking relationship in January of 2006. Bratt Decor has seen significant expansion since then. Michael Pietropaoli, assistant vice president and relationship manager, and Carl Hairston, vice president and team leader, both of

In 2007, crib sales in the United States hit an estimated $1 billion and expected to grow to $1.26 billion by 2012, according to research from Easy Analytic Software Inc. Given those numbers, the future looks steady for those who manufacture cribs as well as nursery case goods, glider rockers and crib mattresses. Even in an economic downturn, many expecting parents still need to visit stores or Web sites to outfit their nursery.

Kid's Today takes a look at this industry and talks with manufacturers to get their take on sales and production in hard times.

Bratt Decor was one of the manufacturers interviewed for its ability to withstand such trying times.

"I believe this is a year to make smart yet conservative business decisions, focus on core products and provide excellent customer service," said one company owner. "There are people affected by the economy, but also stores that are doing very well.

Extreme Makeover has helped another family, and Bratt Decor was a part of it in a big way. Our furniture was key in designing the most luxurious nursery that set had ever seen. Bratt Decor designer Stephen Bauer went on site, personally delivered and set up all the furniture, which included our Casablanca Premiere in gold, changing chest, armoire, jane book case, and jane night stand. We worked with Nava of Nava's designs, who created a gorgeous silk bedding set just for this occasion, and extreme makeover designer, Daniel who was an absolute gentleman and polished professional. The result of our combined efforts was simply breathtaking. Watch for the episode on December 4th at 8pm on ABC.

People Magazine's photo spread of Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony's twins Max and Emme revealed their lush and luxurious nursery that included two Bratt Decor Casablanca Cribs in slate, Art 4 Kids' Madison Bedding and an ivory Max Daniel blanket. However, Parents Magazine is up in arms because they are concerned about what they say are major safety hazards in the room:

The pillows, stuffed animals and blankets in the cribs and draped canopies are suffocation hazards
Bows tied onto the crib slats are choking hazards.
The open window doesn't have a window guard.
While it's true that these concerns are valid, I think the editors of Parents are jumping the gun. As we learned with Brooke Burke's nursery for daughter Heaven Rain and Baby Boy Charvet, the room was styled and staged for a beautiful photo shoot. Most likely, all hazards would be removed before the babies are put in the cribs. Also,

A Nautical theme is a classic choice for any nursery--and great for a summer beach cottage. Start with traditional furniture and add in shades of sea-worthy blues and reds. Break with convention by choosing bright bedding, cherry wall border and fun art, and this is a room that's perfect for your little skipper.

If working for a perfectionist is tough, what's it like working for Bree Van de Kamp, the Desperate Housewives character who makes Martha Stewart look like a slacker?
Baltimore's Mary Bauer says no sweat.

Bauer, who with her husband owns the chi-chi children's furniture store Bratt Decor, just helped actress Marcia Cross do up the nursery for her twin girls. The pretty lilac-and-white results were featured in this week's People.

Bauer flew out to Cross' Brentwood home, but except for the transcontinental travel, it was an ordinary job. Ordinary, anyway, for anyone with $20,000 to splurge on a nursery.
While her character never has a hair out of place, Cross greeted Bauer at the door "in sweats, oversized shirt, and hair in a ponytail and no makeup on."

"You're so used to seeing her on television in that role. She's really not Bree Van de Kamp," Bauer said. "She's got a wonderful home, but it's

Because of the recent lead paint issues within the children's toy industry, I feel it prudent to reassure all of our clients that all Bratt Decor's finishes have been tested by an independent internationally respected testing laboratory, and all comply to both U.S. and European standards for lead content.

In other words all of Bratt's products are manufactured free of icky stuff like formaldehyde, lead and toxic dyes.

Our most recent testing is dated August 17, 2007. The conclusion of these tests was that the finishes complied with the United Sates Standard ASTM F963-07 and the European Standard EN71 Part 3: 1994 (including amendment A1: 2000). These test procedures specifically test for lead content and other "heavy" metals.

Please, rest assured, we are ever diligent in our responsibilities to the safety of our clients. We are parents first, and the safety of every child is always at the forefront of our minds.

Dancing with the Stars co-host Samantha Harris recently opened up her pink and chocolate nursery to Life & Style magazine. "I think it's modern with a vintage edge and I couldn't be happier with it," she says. Harris welcomed her first child, daughter Josselyn Sydney, last month.

Harris chose the Chelsea sleigh crib in buttermilk by Bratt Decor for $1320. The Caden Lane Taylor collection ($450) bedding coordinated nicely with the custom-painted pink walls.

The girly nursery had accents of pink and chocolate heart frames.

Check out the pictures of little Josselyn's nursery in the current issue of Life & Style Weekly.

back from Louisville, KY for the 2010 Spring Conference for independent retailers in the baby and kids industry, and we had a blast. First of all, Louisville is a very charming city, clean, friendly and with a decidedly sophisticated edge. We loved the cool restaurants, and shops. The Museum Hotel was amazing, and was actually just written up in Conde Nast. Check it out, if you're going to Louisville.<><> The show was small and exciting. We saw some of our wonderful store owners from around the country. We saw Debbie from Beautiful Beginnings in Chicago, who is doing great with the line. Spent some time with two of our favorite Left Coast Girls who own The Juvenile Shop in Sherman Oaks, California. If you're ever out there, stop in because the store is beautiful and the service is unparalleled. There was cool new products on the market that you may love.

Here's what we like: A shamelessly feminine nursery that manages to be posh and sophisticated as the same time--much like a certain little girl who lives at the Plaza Hotel. Modern, romantic and whimsical at the same time, this Eloise-inspired nursery reminds us of Dior's New Look. Sometimes it's OK to just enjoy being a girl.

Check out Bratt Decor's ultra feminie furnishings (Jane crib and changer/dresser) featured throughout this Eloise-inspired nursery! We like this look too!

Ribbit! Ribbit! Roar! From Lions to lily pads, animal friends abound in two boys' rooms.

When Kelly Rowley tucks her sons Cale, 3, and Gabe, 4, into bed each night, all sorts of playful creatures-from painted dragonflies to appliqued elephants-join them. To create the boys' rooms, Kelly enlisted the help of interior designer and friend Cathy Kramer, who based the room styles on each child's disposition. In any room, it's important to pick up the personality of the person for whom youre designing, Kramer says. For me that's what makes designing so much fun.

With personality to spare, Cale and Gabe gave Kramer a lot to work with. Gabe is all boy-rough and tumble and very outdoorsy, and he loves frogs, Kramer says. I could envision him bringing frogs home in his pockets, so a pond theme was right up his alley. Cale is boyish, too, but in a softer, quieter way;

Pregnancy & Newborn Magazine chatted with Brooke Burke and her design team to find out how she's integrating this new addition to the family into her nursery and her life. The wrought-iron Venetian cribs from Bratt Decor in gold mixed with other vintage-inspired pieces help to give Burke's nursery an old-world feel, with a modern twist.
