Inside A Real Bratt Nursery

One of my favorite things about my job is I get to speak with new parents and unpack all of the thoughts and decisions that go into creating their nursery. I had the pleasure of speaking with Nicole DeTone who designed a gorgeous, clean and contemporary space, for under $1000! I was especially excited because Nicole was a fellow artist, and her photography work demonstrates both a sense of sophisticated artistry and superior technical ability. With a mind and talent like that, I was inspired to know more.

Congratulations on a beautiful nursery. What inspired your design?
Although our nursery is gender neutral, even if we had known that we were having a boy or girl, we would have still chosen the same color palette and design! Matt and I are big fans of clean, classic, neutral colors and design. We also prefer antique and vintage furniture and decor and when first looking at cribs in other stores, I was so underwhelmed with the choices! And then I came across the white Joy baby crib from Bratt Decor and fell totally in love! It has that vintage feel but still meets all the modern safety requirements we needed! Our crib definitely was then the inspiration for the rest of the room :)

For most parents, budget plays a huge part in the decision making process. What was your budget?
Our budget for the whole room was $1,000. We were able to stay under budget by prioritizing and being savvy... the crib was the most important and most treasured item, so we registered for it and my loving aunts purchased it for us. We refurbished an old family dresser, Matt made the radiator cover, and we already had the arm chair. We chose to spend a little more on the window curtains from Pottery Barn but saved on the closet curtains from Ikea which my mother-in-law hemmed to the perfect length. The canvas above Penelope's crib was handwritten by my cousin and the wood frame was made by Matt. The rest of the decor were either things I had been collecting or crafting!

Penelope is gorgeous. Is she your first?
Yes! And I already want more!

How would you describe the space?
Peaceful, quiet and simple. We live in a densely-populated, fast-paced area just outside of NYC and are always striving to find peace, quiet and simpleness in our lives and wanted that for our baby too. This room helps all of us to feel at peace!

I couldn’t agree more. Your space is exudes tranquility and simple elegance. I love how you didn’t compromise on your aesthetic even with a strict budget. To see more of Nicole’s nursery photos, visit her website.
